2012-2013 The Kufuor Postgraduate Target Scholarship, UK

Following a generous gift made by the Kufuor Biographical Project to celebrate the leadership of President Kufuor in Ghana and to mark Ghana’s 50th Independence Anniversary, Exeter College is offering the Kufuor Scholarships (linked to a Clarendon Award) for a top Ghanaian student who wishes to undertake a graduate degree at Exeter College, University of Oxford.

The Scholarship is tenable from 1 October 2011 for one year, renewable for a further two years, and is worth £5,500 per annum in addition to the Clarendon Award. The Scholarship is open to any student who

• is an Ghanaian Citizen, resident in Ghana, and
• wishes to read for a graduate degree at Exeter College, Oxford, and
• has been accepted into the University of Oxford onto such a graduate course, and
• commits to remaining at Exeter College for the duration of his or her course, and
• gives an undertaking (and signs a letter to that effect) to return to Ghana to work in the Public Sector on completion of his or her course of study, for a minimum of one year, in order to make a contribution to that country.

Candidates for the scholarship Kufuor apply directly to the university at a price Clarendon, marking their preference Exeter College. If a candidate has achieved at a price of Clarendon and meets the above criteria, he or she will be automatically considered for a scholarship Kufuor.

The University´s interdisciplinary Energy and Environment theme addresses the international scientific consensus of rapid and globally damaging environmental change driven by natural resource demand and greenhouse gas emissions. This network forms one strand of our commitment to address the imperative to adapt the way humans capture and utilise energy, manage waste, do business and govern themselves to mitigate and manage the impacts of environmental change. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) of CO₂ underground is now recognised as a major tool we have for tackling environmental climate change in the short to medium term. The Deep Carbon network will focus on this by building new physics technologies using muon particle detection, needed to monitor what happens to the carbon placed underground, on new geo-physical and engineering models for CO₂ storage, needed to optimise selection of suitable deep sites, and new international governance structures, required to underpin legal aspects of safe carbon storage. Award details: A network of three PhD scholarships, one each in Physics, Engineering and Law, is being funded by the University for 3 years, providing a stipend at the standard Research Council rate (£13,590 in 2011-12), UK/EU fees and a research training grant of £1,000 p.a.

The academic staff, undergraduate students together with the support staff, postdoctoral assistants and postgraduate students make up a vibrant environment.

Applications are invited for the above key post in the School of Mathematical Sciences. The successful candidate will hold a key role in administrative leadership and management to support the School of Mathematical Sciences as it works towards achieving its strategic aims. They will contribute to strategic and operational planning, will provide high level support to the Head of School as well as managing support staff and administrative processes.

Candidates should have a degree, or equivalent, and significant experience of working in a similar or related role within the higher education sector. The sucessful candidate should be able to demonstrate expertise in the management of people, resources and projects, knowledge of HR legislation and regulations, a high level of initiative, the ability to research and analyse information, and excellent organisational, communication, interpersonal and IT skills.

This is a full time fixed term post available for 10 months as a result of maternity leave, and it is expected that you will hold it for the full period. It is expected that the successful candidate will take up the post on 1 May or as soon as possible thereafter.

Fellowship Description:The Business Analytics and Mathematical Sciences Department of the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center invites applications for its 2011-2012 Herman Goldstine Memorial Postdoctoral Fellowship for research in mathematical and computer sciences. The fellowship provides scientists of outstanding ability an opportunity to advance their scholarship as resident department members at the Research Center. The Research Center is located in Westchester County, less than an hour north of New York City.
The Business Analytics and Mathematical Sciences Department provides an atmosphere in which basic research is combined with work on technical problems arising in industry. Currently, about 110 permanent members, academic visitors, and post-doctoral fellows are pursuing research in pure and applied mathematics and in theoretical and exploratory computer science. Areas of research include: algorithms (approximation, randomized, and on-line); data mining (machine learning, pattern recognition, and computational statistics); dynamical systems and differential equations; high-performance computing (including scientific computing and parallel computing); numerical analysis; optimization (discrete, continuous, and stochastic, with risk measures); probability theory (stochastic models, risk management, queues and queueing networks); statistics (time-series, multivariate analysis, design, and reliability); and supply-chain and operations management (pricing, optimization and performance modeling).

Close interaction with permanent department members is expected, but fellows are free to pursue their own research interests.
Up to two fellowships will be awarded. Candidates must have received a Ph.D. degree after September 2006 or should expect to receive one before the fellowship commences in the second half of 2011 (usually in September). The fellowship has a period of one year, and may be extended another year by mutual agreement. 2 PhD studentships are available in the South London Diabetes Cohort study (SOUL-D) which is a prospective study examining the effects of depression in 2000 newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes.

3 year project: Epidemiology of depression in diabetes: identifying risk factors, mechanisms, course and consequences. Ref: K111

Depression is a common problem in diabetes and is associated with worse biomedical outcomes and increased mortality. Little is understood as to the risk factors for depression, what is its natural history and how biological, social and psychological factors interact to increase morbidity and mortality. You will be joining an established and friendly team in the Diabetes Research Group. You will be expected to develop additional hypotheses and appropriate methodologies to test them and contribute substantively towards data collection. This post suits a student who wishes a career in public health, medical informatics or clinical epidemiology.

There is emerging evidence that depression is associated with an innate immune response and this may play a role in its adverse effects on type 2 diabetes which itself has an inflammatory pathogenesis. You will join an established and friendly team in the Diabetes Research Group. You will develop additional hypotheses and appropriate methodologies to test them and contribute substantively towards data collection. The project will be of interest to students who want to combine basic sciences and epidemiology methodologies.

Department of Psychological Medicine
The department focuses on the interface between psychiatry and medicine, psychiatry and occupation, psychiatry and the military, and psychiatry in various settings. The Head of Department is Professor Simon Wessely, who is also Vice Dean for Academic Psychiatry.

Award type

PhD Studentships Semiconductor Materials and Devices University of Sheffield target scholarship

Due to recent major investment, 5 PhD studentships are available in the Semiconductor Materials and Devices Group of the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, which has unrivalled clean room laboratory facilities for crystal growth and device fabrication in the area of III-V semiconductors (http://www.shef.ac.uk/eee/research/smd). These studentships are expected to make a key contribution to maintaining the international competitiveness of the group’s research. The projects cover the following topics:

* Infra-Red Optical Sensors – design, fabrication and testing of novel low-noise high gain infra-red semiconductor detectors for environmental, medical and military sensing and imaging
* Epitaxy on Silicon Substrates – crystal growth studies of III-V semiconductor materials on silicon using Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) for applications in high speed successors to current CMOS
* III-V Semiconductor Devices and Materials on Silicon Substrates – design, fabrication and testing of advanced high speed devices on silicon substrates
* Selective Area Epitaxy – crystal growth studies for high performance novel device concepts using Metal Organic Vapour Phase Epitaxy (MOVPE)

Competitive studentships are available for both UK and overseas citizens. UK and EU citizens who have been in residence in the UK for 3 years or more will be eligible for full tuition fees and stipend support at the standard EPSRC rate.
